2022 WORKSHOPS

This three hour workshop will include a number of premise creation exercises, writing exercises and on your feet exercises to create sketches for one performer.

 

Focusing on big opinions, larger than life characters, and your personal brand of comedy- you will leave this workshop with new writing skills and a bunch of new promising premises. We will be going through a number of writing exercises and performance styles for sketch all on your lonesome!

 

Character monologues, rants, playing multiple people, found audio, ---the list of possibilities in solo sketch is endless. This workshop is perfect for someone looking for a solo piece to pitch to their sketch troupe, or for someone building a tight 25 of their very own.

KIRSTEN

Kirsten Ramsussen is an award winning comedian/writer and sketch director. She's taught and directed improv and sketch for 15yrs.

 

Most recently teaching at Bad Dog Theatre and Second City in Toronto where she also directed professional level sketch shows like Extravaganza Eleganza which won Best Production at the Canadian Comedy Awards.

 

Her solo sketch shows Kirsten, Get Some Friends won the Toronto Sketchfest Audience Choice Award, and her solo sketch show Full Time Idiot won Montreal Sketchfest's Just for Laughs Award.

THE ART OF STAND UP WORKSHOP WITH RYAN BELLEVILLE

The art of crafting a stand up set and learning how to be yourself on stage.

 

In this workshop, participants will be shown some of the basic craftsmanship and techniques of stand up comedy. We will use jokes, material, and improvisation to develop your on stage persona and find comfort on the stage. 

Participants should be ready to be on stage at some point during the workshop. Everyone is required to bring 3 min of material. But don't worry! It doesn’t have to be perfect or hilarious, it can be jokes, a story, or even a biography!

ABOUT

RYAN

One of the stars of the hit Netflix show Workin Moms, where he plays fan favorite Lionel.

 

GQ magazine called him one of the best comics working today. Multiple Screen Award nominated actor, Ryan Belleville has been seen on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, CBS’s The Late Late Show, and MTV’s Busted, and he has made countless appearances at the Just for Laughs Festival, CBC’s Halifax Comedy Festival, and The Winnipeg Comedy Festival.

 

He has performed all over the globe from the Sydney Opera House, to the back of trucks in the desert performing for the troups. Just some of his notable Film and Television credits include, Overlord and the Underwoods, National Lampoons Going the Distance, Disney’s Stuck in the Suburbs, Wynonna Earp, Murdoch Mysteries, The LA Complex, Satisfaction, Almost Heroes, Step Dogs and the award winning family film Finn on the Fly.

MUSICAL IMPROV WORKSHOP WITH BYRON MARTIN & SIMON ABBOTT

In this workshop students will learn the basics of improvising a musical comedy. Participants should be ready to sing as a soloist and in a group as they are given the building blocks of creating songs on the spot.

 

The workshop will cover some basic singing techniques, song structure, an exploration of musicality, rhythm, harmony and poetic devices. It might sound intimidating but this workshop breaks it all down to give you the tools to confidently make up amazing songs and musicals.

ABOUT

BYRON + SIMON

Byron Martin and Simon Abbott are the writers of (Thunder)CATS The Musical, Jason Kenney’s Hot Boy Summer and are the director/musical director of The 11 O’clock Number; The Improvised Musical.

 

Byron is the Artistic Director and Founder of Grindstone Theatre and has his Masters in Musical Theatre Performance from the RCS in Glasgow.

 

Originally from the east coast, Simon has Musical Directed for shows across Canada and plays and teaches music full time in Edmonton.
